Biden explains his call to quit
Until Sunday (local time), US President Joe Biden had remained adamant that he would see his re-election campaign through to the end.
But after a series of public gaffes and a Covid diagnosis, Biden quit and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic nominee.
Days after making the announcement, Biden released a video reiterating his belief that he had earned re-election because of his record during his first term, but “nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy”.
President Biden: “Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy, that includes personal ambition. So, I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our nation.” pic.twitter.com/Df04E33JSO

‘Brat Summer’ befuddles news anchors
Multiple tracks from British singer Charli XCX’s latest album, Brat, found new life through viral clips of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
Charli endorsed Harris with a tweet proclaiming “kamala IS brat”, and Harris embraced the free media blitz by changing the background of her campaign’s official X account to match the low-resolution, lime green Brat album cover.
This had commentators unfamiliar with TikTok trends scrambling to make sense of the phenomenon.

Yellowstone goes boom
Visitors to Yellowstone National Park in north-west US, were sent running and screaming for their lives this week when a hydrothermal explosion spewed boiling hot water and rocks up to 30 metres into the air.
Fortunately no one was injured in the blast at Biscuit Basin – although a boardwalk was left crumpled and covered in debris, including rocks up to a metre round. Nearby trees were also destroyed.
Yellowstone sits on a dormant volcano, but US officials said the explosion was not related to volcanic activity. The area has been closed to visitors for the remainder of the tourist season.
