Videos of the week: Midair near miss, Ash Barty and Russell Crowe return

US police were left dumbfounded as they witnessed a midair near-miss this week, while a call of nature almost cost an ice-cream vendor his livelihood.

Russell Crowe was back in ancient Rome, without his gladiator costume, Ash Barty returned to Wimbledon’s Centre Court and football fans on two and four legs celebrated a nail-biting win.

New York, meanwhile, discovered the wheelie bin.

These are our videos of the week:

Midair miss

America’s Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a near-miss by two planes caught on camera this week.

The two passenger planes came so close to each other near Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Monday that one pilot took evasive action and a midair collision warning sounded.

The two aircraft – American Flight 5511 and Delta Flight 5421 – came within less than 200 metres (600 feet) of each other in the air, according to an analysis of flight-tracking data.

The dramatic morning scene was captured by accident on a North Syracuse police car dashcam.

Watery ice-cream

An ice-cream man’s call of nature resulted in some very soggy cones and a call to his insurance company in the UK.

The Cornwall ice-cream van’s owner had popped to the toilet, only to return to find his business floating on a rapidly rising tide.

Beachgoers unsuccessfully attempted to drag the van in before a tractor was enlisted to return it to shore.

Russell Crow’s Roman return

Russell Crowe returned to a Roman amphitheatre this week, but this time there was no need for gladiator garb.

The Australian actor, who famously asked his audience if they were “not entertained” as a gladiator in the 2000 movie of the same name, this time performed at the ancient Amphitheatre of Pompeii as part of his global Indoor Garden Party music tour.

Crowe shared a video before the show of the impressive relic.

The Italian leg of his tour also included gigs at the Temple of Venus and Rome’s Colosseum.

It’s coming home?

England fans have been waiting since their 1966 World Cup win for their team to claim another major football trophy.

So it was no surprise that when England scored (yet another) last gasp victory to reach the Euros final, fans were barely containable.

And while the streets and stadiums of Germany have hosted thousands of England fans this tournament, supporters back in England still found some venues to create an atmosphere.

Dogs were presumably excluded from the Boxpark Wembley venue, but the excitement of the England-Netherlands penalty shootout was not lost on man’s best friend.

Barty’s Wimbledon welcome

Ash Barty may have officially retired from tennis in 2022, but she was back on Wimbledon’s Centre Court this week.

Exactly three years after winning the Wimbledon women’s singles title, Barty reunited with former partner Casey Dellacqua to beat  Andrea Petkovic and Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova in a women’s invitational doubles match.

Barty and Dellacqua learned of their late venue change only in the final hours before their match.

“A lovely surprise to be able to go out on Centre Court. I thought I’d played my last match out there,” she said.

Secret royal room

The public will soon be able to take their first look at the room where members of Britain’s royal family gather before stepping onto Buckingham Palace’s famous royal balcony.

The outside of the balcony is well documented as the vantage point used by the royals to wave to the public on occasions like coronations, jubilees and Trooping the Colour.

Only members of the royal family are allowed to stand on the balcony. Prior to the palace tour that begins on July 15, no member of the general public had come as close to the balcony since it was built 175 years ago.

The new tour takes the public inside the palace’s East Wing, which includes the room that opens onto the balcony – the Centre Room –as well as other rooms, including the Yellow Drawing Room and the Principal Corridor, which runs the width of the palace.

A wheelie big announcement

To much fanfare, New York City Mayor Eric Adams this week unveiled the city’s latest innovation – the wheelie bin.

At a media conference, with sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch at his side, Adams demonstrated something much of the rest of the world has been doing for decades: Putting rubbish in a bin.

“Today, we are tossing even more black bags into the dustbin of history and taking the next step forward in our ‘trash revolution’,” Adams proudly announced after the demonstration.

The wheelie bin innovation was met with ridicule online by social media users who have been putting rubbish in a bin for as long as they can remember.

And not all New Yorkers welcomed the concept, with some claiming their rubbish bags would not fit in a wheelie bin and others concerned they’d take up too much room.
