He was dubbed the “Bondi Swindler” – convicted of stealing millions of dollars from more than a dozen Australians, while weaving a web of lies about his true identity.
Now, after serving nine years behind bars, Hamish McLaren is about to be released on parole.
But he’s already out on the streets of Sydney, spotted working at a Penrith bike store as part of a prison work-release program.
Former investor Lorraine Cross, who lost her lifesavings to McLaren’s scheme, said she remained fearful of him reoffending.
“He’s definitely a threat because he’s done it multiple times … I can’t see him ever changing,” she said.
Criminal psychologist Tim Watson-Munro warned of the risk McLaren may pose upon his release
“Psychopaths have a chameleon-like ability to adapt and manipulate people … I don’t have great confidence in this guy not reoffending,” he said.
Footage shows McLaren interacting with customers under supervision, with reports he is wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. There are also allegations he is using a false surname while out in the community.
He will remain under strict monitoring when he is released from prison on parole in July.
