Police issue fresh plea in fashion mogul’s killing

Police have launched a fresh appeal for information after a fashion mogul was fatally stabbed, allegedly by a teenager, at a Brisbane house party.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder after the body of 58-year-old fashion founder Greg Josephson was found inside a house in Oriel Street, in the upmarket Brisbane suburb of Clayfield, last Thursday night.

The teenager, who is also from Clayfield and known to the man, has been charged with one count of domestic violence-related murder.

On Wednesday, Queensland Police issued a new plea in relation to the case.

“Operation Xray Matte has been launched and investigators are appealing to anyone with dashcam footage in the areas of Oriel Road, Alexandra Road and Barlow Street, between the hours of 7pm to 8.30pm (on the night of the stabbing), to contact Crime Stoppers,” they said.

Josephson and his brother Michael founded youth fashion chain Universal Store in 1999, and sold it for a reported $100 million in 2018.

Universal Store is one of Australia’s biggest fashion chains, with more than 80 outlets across the country.

Police said last week they responded to a call about 8.15pm on Thursday night, arriving at the $5 million Clayfield property to find a party involving about 30 teenagers.

“I can confirm that there was a party underway at the house with a number of young persons,” Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Williams said last Friday.

“As for what had occurred prior to the incident, it is still under investigation.”

Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said there was “some sort of altercation” before Josephson was found dead. He said the party had been a planned event.

“Police are not looking for any other party, so it was an individual, the 15-year-old is the sole offender that we allege was involved in this incident,” he said.

“This is quite a traumatic incident that occurred, so the welfare of those young people will also be considered in this.”

Police have said most of the teens at the house were unaware of what had happened before officers arrived to find Josephson’s body.

“It was a confusing situation,” Williams said.

“It was confusing until all persons present sort of understood what was going on and why police were there.”

Police allege the 15-year-old was found on a nearby street.

The boy was denied bail at an initial court appearance. He will next appear in court on September 2.
