A series of violent attacks on men, who were allegedly targeted through dating apps, has prompted a safety warning from police.
More than 30 people have been arrested in Victoria after victims were allegedly assaulted, robbed, threatened and harassed with homophobic comments.
Police allege several groups of offenders, mostly young males aged between 13 and 20, posed as legitimate users on platforms to lure men into meeting them.
Some incidents were filmed and posted on social media, police say.
Division Acting Superintendent Carolyn Deer described the offending as concerning and said it would not be tolerated.
“Everyone has a right to go about their lives, meet new people and start a relationship in safety,” she said.
The incidents unfolded across the state, including in Manningham, Casey, Hume, Moorabbin and Knox.
Dozens of people have been arrested since October last year, including three boys aged 13, 14 and 15, for alleged kidnapping and armed robbery.
Two of the boys were charged and bailed to face court, while the 13-year-old was released pending further enquiries.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged for intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and possessing a prohibited weapon without lawful excuse.
Officers are urging victims to come forward, warning that reporting incidents to a dating app does not automatically result in a report being made to police.
“We know this has been a distressing situation for the victims involved and these arrests show just how serious we are in holding offenders to account,” Acting Superintendent Deer said.
“As when using any app or social media platform, please always remain vigilant by protecting your identity and location and verifying the other person’s identity before meeting up.”
Police say investigations remain ongoing.
