Two men have been shot inside a hair salon as police probe whether the targeted attack is linked to the recent killing of an underworld figure.

Emergency services were called to a hairdresser in Sydney’s inner west after reports of multiple shots fired at 1.50pm on Friday.

Officers found two men with gunshot wounds inside the shop on Marrickville Road in Marrickville, about 100 metres from a police station.

Both were treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

“One male 33 years of age was shot in the buttocks area,” Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald told reporters on Friday.

“The other male 20 years of age was shot in the chest.”

The 20-year-old is in a serious but stable condition while the 33-year-old man is stable.

Known to police

One witness told media she saw the two men covered in blood being brought out of the shop by paramedics.

Both are known to police and are not local to the suburb, Supt Fitzgerald said.

“It is very brazen and that’s why we believe it’s obviously a targeted attack,” she said.

Supt Fitzgerald said the proximity of the shooting to the local police station was concerning.

“It is a concern they obviously don’t care where they do it,” she said.

Organised crime and Raptor squad detectives are involved with investigations.

Police are examining whether two vehicles set ablaze on Park Road in Sydenham and Hercules Street in Dulwich Hill are linked to the shooting.

Hunt for getaway car

Supt Fitzgerald said police are looking for another vehicle, a white Toyota Camry with the licence plate DMM-59H, they believe was used as a getaway car.

One local woman said it was highly unusual for such an event to take place in Marrickville.

“It’s like America,” she said. “It’s not safe.”

The scene has been cordoned off to allow examination by specialist forensic officers while a police helicopter canvassed the area.

Officers were seen examining the footpath, shrubbery and bins at the scene of the busy thoroughfare.

Police are looking into whether the attack is linked to the fatal shooting of convicted cocaine kingpin and underworld figure Alen Moradian in Bondi Junction last week.

“That is something that we are looking at, but at this point in time we have not been able to establish that,” Supt Fitzgerald said.
