An elderly woman who was shot in the Bondi Beach terror attack has died in hospital in Sydney after suffering ongoing complications from her injuries.
Eva Geller was shot when two gunmen opened fire at the Hanukkah celebration at Archer Park on December 14 last year, killing 15 people and wounding around 40.
The 90-year-old great-grandmother died on Thursday night at Sydneyâs the Prince of Wales Hospital after having a stroke.
Rabbi Aron Moss told media that Geller â a Holocaust survivor who came to Australia from Hungary as a child â had suffered significant injuries to her legs in the Bondi attack and been in and out of hospital in the time since.
âShe was told after being shot that she will never walk again by the doctors,â he said.
âBut through sheer determination, she got back up and she did walk again.â
NSW Police released a statement saying they were aware that a 90-year-old woman who was a victim of the Bondi terror attack had died in hospital, adding that they were ânow awaiting further advice and are working with the office of the Coronerâ.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said Gellerâs death was âheartbreakingâ.
âMy thoughts are with Evaâs family and the Jewish community as they face another painful loss,â he said.
âAlmost a year on, weâre still living with the pain and aftershock of that evil act.â
Moss said Geller had attended his synagogue as recently as the past high holiday services.
âSheâs a proud mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a beautiful, positive person who, even in these difficult months, maintained her positivity,â he said.
âShe was so sweet, everyone in the community really loved her ⊠itâs a very difficult time.â
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the devastation of the Bondi attack continued to cause pain for families.
âEva should have been able to celebrate Chanukah in peace and safety and instead, her life was changed forever by an act of terror and anti-Semitism,â he said.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also paid tribute to Geller, saying the news of her death was âterribly sadâ.
âAlmost 12 months on from the worst terrorist attack on our soil in our nationâs history, the tragedy has compounded with Eva succumbing to her wounds,â Taylor said in a statement.
âWe grieve for Evaâs family, and our thoughts are with Australiaâs Jewish community who will be devastated by this news.â
One of the gunmen, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police at the scene. His son Naveed Akram is still before the courts facing multiple charges of murder, attempted murder and committing a terrorist act.
