Adele, the reigning queen of the ballad, welled up herself as she opened her first-ever stadium concert in Perth, telling the crowd she’d never forget the moment.

But the British crooner did say she was annoyed the media had sent helicopters to film her rehearsal on Monday.

“I know I’ve never been, and maybe there was no big news yesterday, but they annoyed me,” she told the record audience of 65,000 people at Domain Stadium on Tuesday night.

“They revealed my dress and everything. I wanted it to be a surprise for you!”

It seems the down-to-earth singer and songwriter does not realise the effect she has on her adoring fans and appeared genuinely overwhelmed by the loud cheers throughout the show.

“I had no idea it was going to be this beautiful. Forgive my sweaty face, I’m very hot and nervous,” she admitted.

In Adele’s first visit to Australia she is performing stadium concerts in a 360-degree production designed to make the huge show feel intimate.

Adele described Australia as a second home, saying: “I’ve only been here a week but I can feel it, I can feel it in me bones.”

Performing for two hours, Adele was supported only with a band and did not need to compensate with back-up dancers or wardrobe changes.

She wore an elegant, sparkling gown and her powerful voice soared as she belted out hits including Rumour Has It, Don’t You Remember, Set Fire To The Rain and the James Bond theme Skyfall, which was accompanied by a male choir.

But Adele confessed that as the concert started with Hello, she could not hear anything.

“It’s the first time it’s ever happened to me,” she said.

The Grammy and Oscar winner could add stand-up comedian to her talents, as she delighted the crowd with several funny anecdotes.

She also sang happy birthday to a fan and brought on stage local talent Feminem, who impersonates Adele, and the pair posed for a photo.

“You look better than me. That’s not allowed,” Adele quipped.

There was a lot of confetti during the show, but Adele revealed she cut pyrotechnics because debris went in her son’s eye during rehearsals, although after taking a poll from the audience, she said she might add it back in.

The 28-year-old left the stage briefly, during which a kiss cam provided a lot of laughs, before she returned for an encore to perform When We Were Young, Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You.

Many tears were shed as she sung her emotive songs, but it’s safe to say most were happy ones.

Adele will also visit Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne and Auckland.
