Nicole Kidman has revealed she misses her parents “so much” in an emotional message to mark her late mother’s birthday.
The Babygirl actress’s father Antony died in 2014 after he fell at a hotel in Singapore in 2014.
His cause of death was later ruled as a heart attack. He was 75.
Kidman’s mother, Janelle, died last September, aged 84.
Kidman left the Venice Film Festival, where she had been due to accept the best actress award for her role in Babygirl, in a global dash to get home to Sydney as the news broke.
“Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed,” Kidman said in a message read out at the festival by Babygirl director Halina Reijn.
“I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision of life and art is heart-breaking, and my heart is broken.”
On Thursday, which would have been her mother’s birthday, Kidman reflected on neither parent being in her life any longer.
“Missing mumma and papa so much on what would have been her birthday today,” she wrote to her 10.5 million Instagram followers as she shared an old photo of her parents.
There was plenty of support for Kidman on Thursday.
“Love you Nicole!” actress Elle Fanning wrote below the photo.
Singer Rita Wilson wrote: “The conversation continues. May her memory be eternal.”
Non-celebrity fans also offered support.
“Sending so much love… you look just like the perfect mix of them,” one follower wrote.
Another said: “Tough days to navigate, that’s for sure. Sending love to you.”
The 57-year-old actress has previously insisted she wouldn’t put a “time limit” on her grief.
“Wow, three months on, and people say to me ‘Yeah, she was 84, a good life’. But that was my mum,” she told CBS Sunday Mornings, in December.
“It doesn’t matter what age someone is. There is no limit on grief, you don’t have to have a time limit on it, you don’t have to be all better by this time.
“You’re allowed to pass through in waves and people go ‘Oh well, whatever’, but it’s my mumma, my life, and I’m allowed to process and grieve in the way I want to.”
The Big Little Lies star has Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, with ex-husband Tom Cruise. She also has Sunday, 16, and 14-year-old Faith with her husband Keith Urban and is aware that as an “older mother” she needs to be mindful of her health after taking advice from her own mum.
“The final words my mumma said to me, I was gonna get on a plane, and she said ‘Maybe wait a minute, because you just need to take care of yourself, Nicky’,” she said.
“I’m doing that more, and I say that to other people in the world. Particularly, women, I think we tend not to care of ourselves. We take care of everybody else but the last person is here.
“My grandmother left me with ‘be happy’ and my grandmother said ‘Take care of yourself’.
“I’m an older mother so I wanna be around a long time for my girls, they’re amazing girls and I’m lucky to have them so taking care of myself so that I can take care of them.
“I would like to be around for a long time. Who knows? I don’t get to choose that.”
