Comedian Amy Schumer has sparked controversy with a social media post comparing Australian Oscar winner Nicole Kidman to an alien.

Unfortunately for Schumer, she dug a deeper hole for herself with an unflattering comparison to Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis as she tried to apologise.

The trouble for the 42-year-old star started when she shared a snap of Big Little Lies star Kidman, 56, at the US Open in New York on Saturday (US time).

“This how human sit,” she captioned a pic of Kidman holding her hand under her chin with a focused expression as she watched the women’s final between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka.

The post sparked an instant reaction, with Instagram users blasting Schumer as everything from “mean” to a “bully”.

One accused her of “mean girl public trolling”, while another asked:

“Are you cyberbullying Oscar and Emmy winner Nicole Kidman right now?”

Another wrote: “Bringing others down is always a sign of our own internal insecurities anyway, so the critics here should hold a mirror.”

Schumer deleted the post before following up with apology that went even more off piste.

“I want to apologise to all the people I hurt posting a photo of Nicole Kidman and alluding to her being an alien,” the I Feel Pretty star told her 13 million followers.

“I will be asking the cast of That ’70s Show to write letters advocating for my forgiveness,” she finished, with the hashtag “#takingtimetoheal.”

That was a reference to Kutcher and Kunis’s controversial letters of support for convicted rapist and former co-star Danny Masterson. He was last week jailed for life after being found guilty of raping two women – he will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

“Not only is he a good friend to me I’ve witnessed him be a good friend to others and the kind of brother others would be lucky to have,” Kutcher wrote to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo in late August.

He and Kunis have since apologised for the letters, denying they were aimed at undermining the court process or the testimony of the women involved.

Schumer’s apology post was also deleted, but not before entertainment website Page Six and a few others grabbed a screenshot.

Kidman made her own post after Saturday’s match, congratulating 19-year-old Gauff on her win.

“Congratulations Coco! Thank you, US Open! Great Women’s Final 2023,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories.

Schumer also posted a picture from Flushing Meadows congratulating Gauff.
