Top videos: Nature’s light show, Trump errs and star dog

This week, a solar storm lit up the sky and a portal connected two sisters on different sides of the world.

Plus, a dog dominated the Cannes red carpet, the King unveiled a new portrait and Donald Trump got Jimmy Carter and Jimmy Connors mixed up.

Aurora Australis

Parts of Australia were treated to the result of a huge solar storm over the weekend: Aurora Australis.

The aurora lit up skies, mainly in the southern parts of the country, but the Southern Lights were also seen up in Queensland. If you missed it, don’t stress, you might get a second chance.

Aurora Australis dancing over Melbourne 🇦🇺 😍 🌌☀️ “As you watch the Aurora this evening, it’s worth reflecting that you’re getting a rare direct glimpse of the power of Nature. Those charged particles causing the atmosphere to glow came from a sunspot complex 17 times the diameter of Earth and traveled across 90 million miles at a million miles an hour. Without our magnetic field to protect us, our atmosphere would have been lost to space long ago. Those colours in the sky are Nature reminding us that we’re very lucky to be here amidst the violence. And perhaps therefore also reminding us not to shite it all up” Professor Brian Cox #aurora #auroraaustralis🌌 #melbourne #australia #melbournesky #nightsky #southernlights #auroraborealis #sonyalphaanz #visitmelbourne #melbmoment #sky #astro #astrophotography #sonyalpha

King’s portrait

The King unveiled his first official portrait since his coronation this week.

The portrait was done by Jonathan Yeo, who has painted several other royals. The work proved to be quite divisive, with many being confused by the abundance of red.

Trump’s slip

Speaking at a rally about former US president Jimmy Carter, Donald Trump accidentally called him “Jimmy Connors”.

He quickly rectified his slip-up. To be fair, Trump has a lot going on at the moment.

Legendary Meryl

Meryl Streep got a prolonged standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival this week when she received an honorary Palme d’Or.

I’m just so grateful that you haven’t gotten sick of my face and you haven’t gotten off of the train,” she said.

The star of Cannes

The real star of Cannes was Messi, not Lionel, but the dog from Anatomy of a Fall.

Messi was an absolute delight on the red carpet, posing gracefully and saying hello to the photographers.

Breakout Eurovision winner

This year, Switzerland’s Nemo won Eurovision, but it came at a cost.

Nemo is the first non-binary contestant to win, but they not only broke the trophy, which was quickly replaced, but also injured their thumb.

After taking the stage for their victory performance, Switzerland’s winning entrant Nemo broke the coveted trophy, and later revealed they’d also injured their thumb in the process. Nemo is the first non-binary winner of Eurovision, and their song, ‘The Code’, is Switzerland’s third ever Eurovision win. Celine Dion last won in 1988. #cnn #news #eurovision

Sibling love via Portal

“The Portal” between New York and Dublin was shutdown this week due to some lewd acts, but there were some nice moments.

Two sisters, one in Ireland and one in the US, managed to see each other through the Portal.

New Yorkers — and Dubliners — are connecting in real time thanks to a new art installation, named “The Portal.” The mysterious, interactive piece allows visitors on both sides of the pond to interact — including two flight attendant sisters who met up to say hello to each other, thousands of miles apart. #newyork #dublin #portal

Cub climbers

Three bear cubs proved their agility and speed this week while climbing a tree in suburbia.

The mother bear was also there, but wandered off so eventually her cubs had to jump down and follow her.

Kyle MacLachlan ‘gets it’

Honestly, actor Kyle Maclachlan is showing up younger people on social media.

This week, wearing a hot dog costume, he lip-synced to a Chappell Roan song, and finally one person understood what David Lynch saw in him after so many years.

AFL intern

The AFL’s intern, a seagull, had a very productive week this week.

It’s understood the seagull, who directed a dance routine, inspected the grass and won a staring contest with the Bulldogs’ mascot, will be paid in chips.
