We’re not racists: Cosmo defends Kruger pick
Women’s magazine Cosmopolitan has been embarrassed after nominating Sonia Kruger for its Women of the Year Awards, only months after her call for a ban on Muslim immigration.
The popular mag had to distance itself from Kruger this week when the September edition hit the streets with the list featuring the TV host who told Channel Nine’s Today in July: “There is a correlation between the number of Muslims in a country and the number of terrorist attacks.”
Cosmopolitan publisher Bauer noted that the award selections were made well before Kruger’s comments about Muslim immigration which went viral and made headlines around the country, and that they did not reflect the views of the magazine.
“Cosmopolitan would like to make it clear the nomination of Sonia Kruger in the Fun Fearless Female Women of the Year Awards was made for the September issue of the magazine and before her comments on immigration and other issues were made,” a spokesperson told media website Mumbrella.
“The political, professional or personal views of any nominee are in no way endorsed or supported by Cosmopolitan. This applies to remarks made by Ms Kruger.
“Our readers will decide which of these nominees deserves to win,” they told the website.
The furore began in July when Kruger told Today host Lisa Wilkinson that she agreed with conservative columnist Andrew Bolt and wanted to see a ban on Muslim immigration.
“Personally I think that Andrew Bolt has a point here, that there is a correlation between the number of people who are Muslim in a country and the number of terrorist attacks,” Kruger said.
Kruger later took to Twitter to try to explain her comments, after she was lambasted on social media and called a racist.
