Over the weekend, Australia’s biggest singing export Kylie Minogue delivered a “glorious celebration of pop perfection” at a sold-out concert in London’s Hyde Park.
Wearing a red vinyl jumpsuit, the 56-year-old Melbourne-born pop princess launched into a three-hour set of songs spanning 35 years, leaving the crowd “beaming, breathless and emotional”, according to a review in The Guardian.
She was on “cloud nine”, she told her fans, as she launched into a rendition of last year’s Grammy award-winning hit, Padam Padam with her dancers.
By all accounts, Minogue was still on cloud nine when she spoke to The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick FM breakfast show on Tuesday, when she “accidentally” revealed her next move after releasing her 16th album.
A tour Down Under.
Former AFL champion Brendan Fevola asked her if she was going to tour Australia.
“Is that on the cards?,” he asked.
“Uh … I want to say yes. Yes. The answer is yes! We’re just locking down details.
“Maybe I wasn’t meant to say that, but yes!”
Minogue also teased out a UK tour on BBC Radio 2 the same day, saying “it would stand to reason” given a 17th album is on the cards after releasing new material.
“You know I like to stay busy, and you know I like to always have something up my sleeve.”
Minogue’s loyal fanbase, who have followed her career since the early days when she played Charlene Robinson in Neighbours, were left disappointed after the Splendour In the Grass festival – where she was set to perform exclusively – in Byron Bay was cancelled.
A national tour would mark Minogue’s first since her seven-show run for her ‘Golden Tour’ in 2019.
Career renaissance
Minogue first made a name for her herself in the soap opera in 1986, starring opposite actor Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson.
She pivoted to music, releasing her debut studio album, titled Kylie, in 1988 with catchy pop tracks like I Should Be So Lucky and The Loco-Motion.
Over the past four decades, she’s had seven UK No.1 singles, including Spinning Around and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.
In 2005, the singer had to pull out of a Glastonbury headline slot following a breast cancer diagnosis.
She returned to the festival’s main Pyramid Stage in 2019, where she sang a host of hits from her back catalogue.
Last year, Minogue announced her first Las Vegas residency, following in the footsteps of fellow female music titans like Adele and Celine Dion.
She became the first headliner for nightclub Voltaire, a new venue at The Venetian Resort.
She released her 16th studio album, the electro-dance infused Tension, led by Padam Padam, and performed at Royal Albert Hall in London for An Audience With Kylie.
Minogue is the female solo artist with the third-highest amount of UK chart-topping records, after Madonna and Taylor Swift.
Full circle
Minogue, who is currently single, is said to be at the pinnacle of her career.
She’s got a wine brand, there’s a campaign for a Melbourne laneway to be named after her and sister Dannii, she’s signed a Netflix deal and she’s reportedly writing an autobiography with the help of a ghostwriter.
“She’ll reveal some new anecdotes and stories and dig out some snaps from her archive,” a source told The Sun on Sunday.
“She will cover her music, TV and film roles, and of course her love life. The finished product is sure to incite a bidding war among publishers.”
“It’s been a wild ride, the past 12 months, I’m so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way,” she told Britain’s HELLO! magazine.
“I’m working my socks off but it’s really rewarding. I love sharing this new era with long-time fans.”
