Actress Demi Moore has given a rare update on the health of her ailing former husband Bruce Willis.
Moore and Willis – who have three adult daughters together – have remained close, despite splitting more than two decades ago.
Moore is promoting her upcoming series, Feud: Capote vs The Swans and was asked on US TV this week how Willis was doing.
“I think given the givens he’s doing very well,” she said.
In 2022, Willis’s family announced he would take a step back from the limelight due to cognitive issues. Then, about a year ago, it was revealed he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
Willis also told Good Morning America what she tells daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah abut their father’s health battle.
“What I’ll share is what I say to my children, which, it’s important to just meet them where they’re at, and not hold on to what isn’t but what is,” Moore said.
“Because there’s great beauty and sweetness and loving and joy out of that.”
Despite their divorce, Demi Moore (second left) and Bruce Willis have remained friends.
Willis and Moore married in 1987, just months after meeting. In 1998, they announced their split, and their divorce was finalised in 2000.
However, the two remained very close over the years.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2000, Willis admitted he didn’t know what went wrong in their marriage, but recognised they would have a “lifelong” commitment due to their children.
“I still love Demi. We’re very close,” he said.
“We have three children whom we will continue to raise together, and we’re probably as close now as we ever were. We realise we have a lifelong commitment to our kids. Our friendship continues. The institution has been set aside.”
In 2005, Moore married Ashton Kutcher and Willis was among the 100 guests at the ceremony. Kutcher and Moore also attended Willis’ 2009 wedding to Emma Hemming Willis.
Willis and his second wife also have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
In 2020 as the pandemic hit, Willis and Moore isolated with their children in the Idaho home they had once shared as a family.
“It worked out that Bruce came and spent time with us,” Moore said in 2021. Hemming Willis and the two younger girls joined the extended family “a little bit later when the kids were finished with school”.
“It was really a blessing,” Moore said.
“It’s everything that’s come forward has allowed us to reevaluate what’s important and what needs attention that has been overlooked and neglected. It was amazing.”
She said her adult daughters “love their little sisters”.
“Our family, regardless of what the shape of it is, it’s important to keep together and for the little ones to feel comfortable with me, and to know me so they also know their sisters better,” Moore said.
“It was really sweet and we did have some silly times for sure.”
The blended family has also offered few insights into how Willis is doing as his health deteriorates.
Last year, Hemming Willis said it was hard to tell if the former actor was aware of his condition.
“Dementia is hard … it’s hard on the person diagnosed, it’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls,” Heming Willis said in an interview with US Today.
“When they say this is a family disease, it really is.”
Last month, Rumer Willis shared her own update after her “incredibly dynamic” 2023. She said one of the highlights was the birth of her daughter last April, and spending “precious love-filled moments with my daddio”.
