John Farnham’s fans have gotten their first glimpse of the singer since he underwent surgery to remove cancer last year.

In a holiday snap shared by his son, the 74-year-old singer can be seen at the head of a table surrounded by family, his face partially hidden by floral arrangements, while his wife Jillian hugs him.

The social media post was quickly flooded by messages from Farnham’s fans, who were relieved to see the singer appearing to be doing well after his major surgery in August last year, and a chest infection scare in May.

“Merry Christmas Farnham family. It has made my day to see John after so long,” one Instagram user commented.

Another wrote, “Wishing your family a wonderful Christmas. How generous of you to share a photo of your precious [John] with us.”

Farnham has been living largely under the radar as he recovers from an almost 12-hour surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his mouth, which reportedly included the removal of part of his jaw.

Before his surgery, Farnham said a cancer diagnosis was something many people faced each day “and countless others have walked this path before me”.

“The one thing I know for sure is that we have the very best specialist health care professionals in Victoria and we can all be grateful for that. I know I am,” he said.

A year after the surgery, the singer announced he was officially in complete remission – a special occasion he marked by thanking his fans for their unwavering support, while surrounded by his wife and two sons at home.

“I am the luckiest man I know right now. It’s been a year since my first surgery and to be honest I’ve lost count as to how many other procedures there’s been since then,” he said in a statement.

“I’m sure someone’s kept track of them all – let’s just say, there’s been a few.”

Although it has been quiet on the career front for the singer, apart from the release of a documentary on Farnham’s life, he took a strong political stance this year by giving permission for his anthemic song You’re the Voice to be the soundtrack for the Yes campaign in the Indigenous Voice referendum.
