The 'ugly' shirt trend has been around for a while, but TikTok has made it so everyone can enjoy it.

TikTok is awash with ‘ugly’ T-shirts that are worn as a joke on nights out and holidays, in a trend that has its roots in the 1980s.

The ‘s–t shirt’ trend has been a thing online for a while, with videos of people dating back a few years.

However, a recent video from a girl’s trip went viral on TikTok and had people in stitches.

The trend itself is pretty simple: Your friends pick a shirt for you to wear but it has to be ‘ugly’.

The shirt might be selected specifically for you, or in other cases, people have put all the shirts in a bag and people select at random.

The catch is, you have to wear the shirt on a night out. Some have done this while they are on holiday. Others have done it on a night out.

Regardless, nearly every time, the results are hilarious.

‘Ugly’ shirt trend on tour

Recently, a TikTok of this trend went super viral, getting more than 4.7 million likes since it was shared in June.

Norwegian TikToker Malin Hodne made a video of her and her friends getting the shirts they had picked for each other.

One was a fluorescent shirt with the TikTok logo. Another was covered in pink flowers, a car and the word ‘fashion’ written on the front.

Another was a graphic shirt with Among Us characters on it.

The last shirt was bright red, depicting a cartoon silhouette sitting on the toilet, with the tagline reading: ‘Downloading.’

The girls all laughed as they put the shirts on over their clothes and then went out.

Ms Hodne said in the captions of the video it was their last night out on their holiday.

Everyone in the comments loved the video, and were in awe that the group committed to it and wore the shirts out.

Some argued over which shirt was the worst. The general consensus was that the Among Us shirt wasn’t too bad, or “low-key slayed” and the TikTok one was the worst of the bunch.

One person did remark that their mother would probably gravitate towards the “fashion” top.

‘Ugly’ shirt parties date back decades

While Ms Hodne’s video is extremely popular, it is not the first of its kind.

There are other videos of friends following the same rules.

There are other videos dating back years, but according to S–t Shirt Club, the idea can be traced to the 1980s.

“S–t shirt parties, or s–t shirt nights, are believed to have originated in the 1980s as a way for people to express themselves and make a statement with their clothing,” the website says.

“And let’s be honest, the ’80s were all about making a statement with your fashion choices (just think of the wild patterns and neon colours that were popular at the time). Today, s–t shirt parties are a popular choice for events and gatherings of all types, from casual get-togethers to fancy dress parties.”
