The big smoke

This week, smoke from Canada’s wildfires blanketed New York City, causing the air quality to reach hazardous levels.

People were urged to stay inside if possible. Health alerts due to the smoke were also issued in Boston, Washington DC, Charlotte, Detroit and Indianapolis.

On Friday, David ‘Kochie’ Koch finished up a 21-year run on Sunrise, with his final episode dedicated to celebrating his career.

Many famous faces said goodbye to him on air, but he was shocked to receive a special letter from none other than Dame Julie Andrews, the iconic actress known for her roles in Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries.

During a performance on her Eras Tour, Taylor Swift accidentally swallowed an insect. Swift turned her back to the crowd and tried to cough it up before admitted she had swallowed a bug.

Kilauea erupts

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted again this week. It is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. 

Stunning footage of lava spilling out was captured on camera. Tourists are being asked to be respectful when trying to get a glimpse of the latest eruption.

Reporter keeps cool

A reporter was forced to push away an unruly fan in the middle of her broadcast during theice hockey’s Stanley Cup. CBS Miami reporter Samantha Rivera was just trying to do her job when a fan tried to get in her shot. She managed to push him away without skipping a beat.

“Listen, I don’t give a damn what team you’re rooting for – get the hell out of my face when I’m working and respect that I’m here to do my job,” she wrote on Twitter.

Squirrel plays dead

A squirrel, potentially desperate for some attention, decided to run into a home and play dead.

The squirrel knocked over a broom and managed to get the handle to lay across its body, adjusting it when necessary while lying flat and pretending the knock had been fatal.

Streaking fan

A fan at the Sydney vs St Kilda AFl match on Thursday night managed to streak across the field and evade capture.

In one video shared to TikTok, the streaker is seen jumping back into the stands and the steward tries to jump the fence, only to fail, while fans in the stands cheered.

Brown bears on high

Remarkable footage shared by the Cantabrian Brown Bear Research Group caught a female bear with her cubs lapping up some sun in the Cantabrian Mountains in Spain.

The researchers said it was one of the “greatest moments” this year.

Tram bowling

Tram bowling, where a tram hits a large ball at inflatable pins, is a thing. Drivers competed this week at the Tram-EM European Tramdriver Championship in Oradea, Romania. 

There are six disciplines at the competition, with tram bowling proving to be very popular on social media.

Royal cat cameo

There have been quite a few surprise appearances from pets and children in live TV interviews, but one royal expert handled it seamlessly.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig’s rescue cat, Fleur, jumped on her lap mid-interview, however, Koenig managed to swiftly pick her up and get her out of the shot.
