Multi-ton American and Japanese robots to fight
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s “Fight of the Century” could be set to be eclipsed by a giant robot bout scheduled to happen in a year.
A multi-ton robot from America’s MegaBots engineering will square off against a bot from the Japanese Suidobasho Heavy Industry company.

In a video, two representatives from MegaBots challenged the Japanese firm to a duel. They say they have a robot called “the Mark II, America’s first fully functional giant piloted robot”.
“And because we’re American, we’ve added really big guns,” MegaBots boast.
It didn’t take long for the Japanese company to respond to the challenge. They said they’d be more than happy to have their similarly giant human-driven robot do battle.
“Just building something huge and sticking guns on it … It’s super American,” Suidobasho’s founder Kogoro Kurata said.
“On behalf of Japan, we accept your challenge.”
The American robot costs around $175,000 USD to build and weighs almost 5,500 kgs while the Japanese robot sells for $1 million USD and weighs just over 4,000 kgs.
“[Suidobashi] is about three times faster than we are,” MegaBots cofounder Gui Cavalcanti said. “Their tech is currently more advanced, but we have about a year to catch up. I think it’ll even out.”
No date has been set for the fight but both technology companies plan to announce the fight’s time and location soon.
