Aldi Australia has recalled one of its most popular freezer food ranges, amid fears eating it may cause allergic reactions among some.
The Chicken Breast T-Rex bits have been sold at Aldi stores across Australia.
The recall affects the entire range, with all date codes and batches.
“The recall is due to the presence of an undeclared allergen (peanut),” Food Standards Australia New Zealand said.
“Any consumers who have a peanut allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed.”
Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital warns that peanut allergies are common in Australia, affecting up to 3 per cent of all children.
“Usually, a child who is allergic to peanuts or other nuts will only have a mild reaction. However, peanuts and tree nuts (especially cashews) are a common cause of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of an allergic reaction, and is life threatening,” it says.
They are more common in people who have other allergic conditions, such as hay fever, asthma and eczema, as well as those who are allergic to other foods such as shellfish or dairy. The hospital says allergies can develop at any age, including in adults.
FSANZ warned that anyone with a peanut allergy or intolerance should not eat the T-Rex range.
It can be returned to any Aldi store for a full refund.
“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,” FSANZ said.
