Netflix has acquired the rights to a controversial satire film with Adolf Hitler as the main character.

The film, based on the best-selling German book Er ist Wieder Da (He is Here Again) charts the experience of Adolf Hitler after he wakes up in 2011 inside a Berlin loft.

Navigating his way around modern society, Hitler makes a number of hilarious assumptions including that the presence of Turks in Germany is a sign he convinced the former to join the axis.

In the film’s trailer, Hitler is seen arguing with a dry-cleaner while trying to get his Nazi uniform cleaned and trying to avoid being hit by a group of segways.

When told he can type “anything he desires” into a Google search, Hitler writes “World domination”.

Despite his unfriendly demeanour, the public takes Hitler for a comedian or method actor, and he eventually becomes so popular he decides to go back into politics.

Despite the touchy subject matter, the film has gained mostly positive reviews, although the Jewish Daily Forward suggested the danger of the audience “laughing not merely at Hitler, but also with him.”

The Netflix acquisition comes at the same time Germany legalised the re-printing of Hitler’s part-autobiography and part-manifesto, Mein Kampf, after a decades-long ban following the fall of the Third Reich.

The book sold out at many online retailers within hours of sale.

The film will be available on Australian Netflix from April 9.
