Scott Weiland, former lead singer of grunge band Stone Temple Pilots, has died age 48.

The singer, who also fronted Velvet Revolver during the latter portion of his career, was most recently at the helm of Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts.

A statement on Weiland’s Facebook page said he had “passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota”.

The first news of Weiland’s death came via guitarist Dave Navarro, who tweeted: “Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight.”

That tweet has since been removed.

Hailing from San Diego, Stone Temple Pilots were one of the more successful stemming from the 1990s ‘grunge’ movement.

They achieved critical acclaim and commercial success with the release of their 1992 debut Core and it’s 1994 follow-up Purple.

Weiland was also the original vocalist of ‘super group’ Velver Revolver, which consisted of members of Guns and Roses.
