He might be one of Hollywood’s most lucrative leading men, but Harrison Ford wasn’t always cashing in.

In fact, the actor has revealed he almost turned down George Lucas’ offer of the part of Han Solo in the 1977 original, Star Wars.

Ford had been reading the part of Solo in auditions as a help to Lucas during the casting process, but ended up proving himself worthy to play the part in earnest.

But in a recent interview Ford revealed he didn’t immediately snap up the opportunity to star in what’s now one of the world’s most iconic films.

“I said how much? They said $1000 a week, and I said no. But I did, I did it for $1000 for a week,” he said.

“And then that went up significantly for the next film?” asked the interviewer.

“A little bit, yeah,” laughed Ford.

Ford clearly doesn’t regret taking up the offer, but he wouldn’t have been out of line for rejecting it.

The actor had already been making a name for himself in Hollywood, and had worked with Lucas before, on the 1973 classic American Graffiti.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is due in cinemas at the end of December, and there’s no sign the 73-year old is slowing down yet.

When asked if he would consider doing a fifth Indiana Jones, Ford was jovial.

“How much? No I’m kidding, it’s not about the money. I’d love to do it. I’d love to do it before I’m 80.”
