The Game of Thrones season five premiere leaked online late on Saturday night, days before the episode is set to debut on Foxtel at 11am Monday morning (AEST).

The internet was abuzz early on Sunday with fans positing links to torrenting sites where the first episode was available.

Some reports even suggested the first four episodes of series five of HBO‘s smash hit drama had made their way online.

Foxtel has chosen to simulcast all Season Five GoT episodes with their airtime in America to quell the influence of leaks and illegal torrent downloading, but it seems not even this measure could save the spoilers surfacing.

For local viewers, there is also HBO Now, an online arm of the American pay-tv-network, which can be accessed by Australians with a VPN to watch the show.

The leaks appear to have come from a ‘screener’ distributed to reviewers in anticipation of the highly anticipated season’s launch.

The sending out of a ‘screener’ to critics is a regular practice for film, TV and music releases and making them available to the public is frowned upon, however it is unclear at this stage if the source will be able to be found.

Variety reported earlier this year that GoT was the most illegally downloaded series for 2014, with Australia the fourth biggest nation for total television program downloads behind Brazil, Russia and India.

Only last week one of GoT’s producers told The Denver Post that he and the rest of the hit tv shows crew were ‘worried’ that the series would leak before it went to air.
