While Singapore may have the best airport in the world, Melbourne is again been named the best in Australia and the Pacific.

The annual Skytrax World Airport Awards, announced on Wednesday night, found that Changi had supplanted Doha’s Hamad airport as the world’s best in a top 20 dominated by Asian cities.

With Hamad relegated to second spot, Tokyo’s Haneda airport, was third, followed by Incheon International Airport in South Korea and Japan’s second international aiport, Narita, in fifth place.

Melbourne Tullamarine, meanwhile improved its position from 19th in 2024 to 16th in 2025, according to the Skytrax awards, which are voted by travellers in the world’s largest airport customer satisfaction survey.

Melbourne was judged to have the best airport in Australia and the Pacific for the third consecutive year. In fact, it has claimed the title in five of the past six years, with other wins in 2020 and 2021.

Travellers in the survey assessed airports’ overall quality and efficiency based on criteria including accessibility, operations, amenities, cleanliness, staff friendliness and helpfulness, as well as technology.

Speaking at the awards in Madrid, Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said Tullamarine’s dedicated staff, focus on travellers and infrastructure investments were key factors in the win.

“The needs of travellers are always front of mind and our ‘Stepping Forward’ program empowers and encourages our staff to offer genuine assistance to passengers wherever they need it,” Argus said.

Melbourne Airport has been busy investing in major upgrades, including new retail, food and beverage outlets; security screening refurbishments and upgrading baggage systems and airfield infrastructure.

“We have some major works ahead of us with a transformation of the road network underway, a third runway to build and an expansion of our international terminal to deliver over the coming years, and we thank people for their patience.”

This week Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reinforced his pledge to help fund Melbourne’s Airport Rail link.

Despite previously announcing that a train to Melbourne Airport would be running by at least 2033, the Victorian government on March 20 refused to put a timeline on the completion of the $4 billion project.

At the time, Argus said a train link was needed for Melbourne to be a world-class airport.

“We know that Melbourne is one of the few airports that doesn’t have one,” she said.

Melbourne is the second busiest airport in Australia after Sydney. Unlike Sydney, it has no curfew and operates 24 hours a day.
