Is this the worst hotel deal in Australia right now?

Thanks to a Melbourne entertainment entrepreneur you can pay $360 a night to camp on the top of a CBD building in the middle of winter.

The St Jerome’s Hotel on top of Melbourne Central Shopping Centre opened in late May and sleeps guests in tents that are open to Melbourne’s unpredictable elements and noisy bars and clubs.

To put that offer in context, a quiet, warm and private room at a luxury hotel like Westin, two city blocks away, will cost you under $300 on a Saturday night.

Privacy seems to be at a minimum in the latest venture from Jerome Borazio, with guests ‘rooms’ separated by only a few metres and the material that poses as their walls.

Mr Borazio has brought Melbourne many amazing things – Laneway Festival, 1000 Pound Bend, Ponyfish Island and Sister Bella – but his latest offering might take hipster/hobo chic just that little bit too far.

Surprisingly most of the TripAdvisor reviews for the ‘hotel’ have been quite positive, with many saying their time was delightful.

However one review pointed out that the noise from the surrounding buzzing city life to be ‘unbearable’.

The St. Jerome’s Hotel website describes the concept as, “alternative accommodation with a charming soul”.

“It’s enjoying the ultimate urban get away without even leaving. And it’s doing it with finesse.”

Accommodation cost includes breakfast, a concierge service, ‘onsite reception gurus’, on the house coffee and meditation sessions.

Although bathroom facilities are shared and we don’t want to even think about having to go out to the loo in the middle of a blustery evening.

That hasn’t put off this reviewer who wrote: “Overall I loved my stay at the hotel and would highly recommend everyone give it a go!”

There are new St Jerome’s Hotels planned for Auckland and Hobart.
