The Daily Deuce: Day three

Polar opposites

It was a study in contrasts last night when Maria Sharapova played Bethanie Mattek-Sands. While Sharapova was sleek and stylish in her blue Nike outfit, Mattek-Sands chose to wear knee-high socks, a colourful headband, purple hair, three different prints, orange shoes and a gold crucifix necklace. Definitely an interesting style statement.

 Ber-ditch that shirt, Tomas

We have finally found an excuse for Tomas Berdych’s horrible H&M outfit! He has to be an avid Kangaroos supporter! Or A Banana in Pyjamas!

If none of the above, then we don’t really know what to say. Although this adorable post-match selfie does make up for his lack of fashion sense.

Tantrum time

He put in a valiant effort yesterday taking world number 17 Kei Nishikori to five sets, just don’t call Marinko Matosevic “Mad Dog”. The internet was buzzing today with quotes from Matosevic’s post-match press conference, where he pretty much complained about everything. Some memorable quotes included:

On why he started signalling to his coach at the end of the match: “I wanted my coach to vocally support me, but he wouldn’t. Some players need verbal support, some don’t. I’m a player that likes it and needs it and wants it.  So if my coach is just going to sit there and clap, I expect more.”

On his nickname ‘Mad Dog’: “I allowed myself to get distracted then…hearing the stupid nickname…It’s not my nickname.  Some idiot put it on Wikipedia.”

On getting closer to winning a Grand Slam: “I don’t give a s**t, man.  What do you want me to say to that?”

On getting a time violation: “That was bulls**t.”

He’s just being Miley

Richard Gasquet did his best Miley Cyrus impression during his match with Nikolay Davydenko:

Suited up

Hey, Serena Williams, did you notice that it’s 40 degrees out? Was that jacket really necessary? Williams said after winning her second round match against Vesna Dolonc that to deal with the heat, “I just think I’m in Hawaii riding a wave.” Clearly it’s working.

Meanwhile, Serena’s mother, Oracene Price, is taking her style cues from Redfoo.
