American gymnast Aly Raisman has taken to social media to write an open, inspiring letter to her fans on body confidence.
The 23-year-old, a three-time Olympic Games gold medallist, has combined with Simone Biles to make the United States a dominant force in gymnastics in recent years.
And she is immensely popular on social media, boasting more than 2.3 million followers on Instagram and nearly one million on Twitter.
Raisman has frequently spoken out on the issue of body image and body shaming, and made headlines last month when she said she experienced body-shaming at an airport security check.
In a message of inspiration for her fans and a hope they don’t suffer similar experiences, Raisman has penned a note to them, accompanied by a photo of her in a daring, dark-green, one-piece outfit.
“Wear whatever makes you feel happy and confident,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Don’t EVER let anyone tell you how you should or shouldn’t dress.
“We are all entitled to wear what we want. Females do not have to dress modest to be respected.
“Be proud of your body. It’s never about the number on the scale, it’s about the way you feel.
“You are all unique and beautiful in your own way.”
Raisman went on to say that feelings of insecurity were normal – for men and women.
She also thanked her fans for their ongoing support.
“No one is perfect. AND no matter who you are, male or female, we all have those days of insecurity,” she added.
“We are all human. Everyone’s story is important. EVERYONE. You never know what someone is going through.
“Thank you all for continuing to inspire me each and everyday.”
Raisman, who has won six Olympic medals, is also a two-time world champion in the team gymnastics event.
