‘Absolute disgrace’: Condemnation continues after Trump’s World Cup intervention

The FIFA World Cup has been thrown into controversy after American striker Florian Balogun’s one-match suspension was overturned following reports US President Donald Trump personally urged FIFA to review the decision.

According to The New York Times, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after Balogun’s red card against Mexico, with football’s governing body later reversing the automatic suspension.

It is believed to be the first time FIFA has overturned a straight red card suspension during a World Cup since 1962.

The decision has sparked widespread criticism from across the football community.

Australian football commentators Andy Harper and Craig Foster questioned the precedent it sets, while former Socceroos captain Paul Wade described the move as “an absolute disgrace”.

Belgium coach Óscar García also mocked the decision, joking that July 5 had become “April Fools’ Day.”

The controversy now shifts to the United States’ Round of 16 clash with Belgium, where Balogun is eligible to play.

Should he help send the Americans through, the debate over politics, FIFA and the integrity of the tournament is likely to intensify.
