Sydney Roosters have brushed aside a disappointing Canberra side 34-6 in a one-sided affair at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Trent Robinson’s side ran in six tries with all but one of their seven-man backline getting on the scoresheet as the Raiders’ miserable record at the venue continued.

The Green Machine have tasted victory just once in their past 16 visits to Allianz Stadium and for Ricky Stuart it was the eighth time in 10 encounters he’s been on the losing side to the club he coached between 2002-06.

Shaun Kenny-Dowall opened the floodgates in the third minute following a superb pass from Mitchell Pearce with James Maloney kicking the extra two points.

Roger Tuivasa-Shek scampered under the posts eight minutes later after taking full advantage of a poor read from the Raiders defence with Maloney doubling the advantage from a simple kick.

The Raiders’ woes continued midway through the opening stanza when Blake Ferguson, the player they sacked in 2013, breezed through the visitors’ vulnerable right-side to score his third try in two games.

An inability to retain the ball continued to hurt Stuart’s side but they did find the tryline two minutes before halftime from their first real moment of quality when Jarrod Croker pounced on a perfectly-weighted Mitch Cornish kick.

But the start of the second half mirrored the first with the Raiders turning over the ball in midfield and from the resulting scrum Michael Jennings raced clear to score.

That setback knocked the stuffing out of Canberra and in the 49th minute their right flank was again breached when Daniel Tupou leapt above Jordan Rapana to haul in a Maloney kick.

Maloney, off-contract at the end of the season, had a storming game and his excellent all-round display was capped off with a runaway try after being put clear by Tupou.

Elsewhere, Brisbane held off a big Warriors’ fightback for a 24-16 victory in Auckland.

But the win came at a cost, with skipper Justin Hodges leaving the field with a hamstring complaint and expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.

The Broncos also had Adam Blair go off with a thigh injury but the prop is expected to be available to face Gold Coast next week.

Brisbane were the Warriors’ first opponents when the latter entered the competition in 1995 and they were 25-22 winners that night.

In the 20th anniversary re-match on Sunday, it looked like they would run away with the contest when up 16-0 at half-time at Mt Smart Stadium.

Instead, they had to withstand plenty of pressure before Andrew McCullough scored with 30 seconds to go to seal the win for a 3-1 season record.

Coach Wayne Bennett gave his players plenty of credit for their defensive resolve.

“They got two tries off bombs and we denied them on quite a number of occasions, which turned out to be the difference,” he said.

“You want your team to be brave and gutsy and they were all those things today.

“We lost a couple of key players in Blair and Hodges in a crucial part of the game, and they kept putting their hand up and grinding away and not giving the game away.”
