Baird’s ‘wrong’ Grand Prix plot

NSW Premier Mike Baird is expected to announce on Friday that he wants the Formula One Grand Prix to move from Melbourne to Sydney.

If re-elected on March 28, Mr Baird would establish an expert bid team to work to lure the Grand Prix away from Melbourne, News Corp has reported.

• Why I’ll be ignoring the Formula One circus
• Was money responsible for Bianchi crash?
• Daniel Riccardo all smiles, but for how long?

Mr Baird reportedly wants the Harbour Bridge to be part of the Formula One race course.

Australian Grand Prix chairman Ron Walker has described the plan as ill-advised, saying it would take years to realise.

“[The Premier’s] team of advisers have advised him very wrongly,” Mr Walker told ABC on Friday.

“We have a contract with [Formula One Group chief executive Bernie] Ecclestone until 2020 and we have another five-year option…so it’s a long time before Sydney could even think about it.”

If that’s not enough to deflate Mr Baird’s racing hopes, Mr Walker said the five-year contract will probably be extended to 10 years in the next few months.

This year’s Grand Prix will begin at Melbourne’s Albert Park on Friday.
