Raiders knock Eels out of finals contention

Canberra ended the season with a 33-20 win over Parramatta at Canberra Stadium to finish off the Eels’ finals chances.

The Raiders ran in five tries to four against the Eels, to score the club’s eighth win of the season.

The home side had a perfect start after four minutes when Jeremy Hawkins went in for the game’s opening try.

Hooker Glen Buttriss made it 12-0 after 18 minutes when his four-pointer was converted by Jarrod Croker, but Parramatta’s Ken Sio put the visitors on the scoreboard when he went over in the 29th minute.

A penalty to Croker made it 14-6 and then Bill Tupou scored the Raiders third try five minutes before the break to make it 20-6 at the half.

After a quiet opening to the second half, four tries were scored in a 10-minute period.

Paul Vaughan and Josh McCrone scored for the home side, while Sio and Jarryd Hayne answered for Parramatta.

The Eels went in again with Hayne scoring his second after 66 minutes, setting up a tense finale with the Raiders holding a 32-20 lead.

But the home side’s defence held out and Anthony Milford kicked a late field goal to seal the win.
