Matildas’ heartbreak: lose to Brazil in shootout
The Matildas’ Olympic dream has ended with a gallant, but heartbreaking quarter final loss to host nation Brazil.
Brazil’s 7-6 penalty shootout victory sees it progress to the final four of a tournament blown wide open following the shock elimination of Olympic and world champions the USA.
Brazil now encounters the less threatening Sweden.
The Matildas went into halftime at 0-0 with Brazil in a tense game in Belo Horizonte.
The Australians were jeered constantly, but overcame early nerves.
Steph Catley, who missed an earlier game in the pool stages through injury, was forced off inside the opening 20 minutes.
After the match, forward Caitlin Foord tweeted she was “shattered”.
“Proud of everyone tonight, we gave it everything. Thanks for all the support,” she said.
