Imagine facing the media immediately after narrowly missing out on the Olympic medal you had spent years training for.

Heartbreaking, right?

Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui handled the disappointment incredibly well, cracking jokes all the way through a hilarious post-race interview.

But as it turns out, she did win a medal. She just didn’t know it.

Her reaction to the news is priceless.

We just can’t stop offending the Chinese

A Channel Seven newsreader accidentally labelled Chinese swimmer Sun Yang a “cheat” during the network’s live Olympics coverage on Tuesday evening.

Amanda Abate was hosting a brief update segment when the awkward gaffe occurred.

Amanda Abate made an anti-China faux pas live on air.

“The big names of swimming are lining up to support Aussie gold medallist Mack Horton with mounting backlash from China for calling one of its cheats, sorry, one of its stars, a drug cheat,” Abate said.

Her co-host Ryan Phelan quickly intervened: “Slip of the tongue with Sun Yang?” Phelan asked Abate. “It happens,” he said.

“I definitely didn’t mean that,” Abate responded, “but look … it’s a talking point.”

Chinese supporters have launched a vitriolic campaign against Australian swimmer Horton after he described Sun as a “drug cheat”, following his 400m freestyle final victory over his rival.

Olympic star sent home for partying

Dutch gymnast and strong medal chance Yuri Van Gelder has been sent home from Rio.

His crime? A wild night of celebrations.

Van Gelder hit the town following his rings final qualification on Saturday (local time), returning early Sunday morning.

A seething Olympic Committee acted swiftly and have sent Van Gelder packing.

In 2009, Van Gelder was suspended from the Dutch Gymnastics Union for taking cocaine.

Even Katie Ledecky gets star struck

American swimmer Katie Ledecky is the talk of the pool.

The 19-year-old has already won two gold medals in Rio, to go with the one she won at London in 2012.

She’s currently sharing the limelight with Michael Phelps, who won two gold medals on Wednesday (AEST), taking his career tally to 21.

And a photo of the pair meeting – when Ledecky was just 10 – has emerged to celebrate their achievements.

Pool turns ghastly green

Fans of the diving are used to seeing competitors jump into crystal clear blue water.

Not in Rio. The diving pool water has turned green.

Officials assured competitors tests showed the pool posed no health risk.

Investigations into the cause were ongoing.

Ukraine ‘give up’

Instead of performing a routine on the high bar and the parallel bars, Ukraine gymnast Maksym Semiankiv hung onto the bar for a second, dropped and then nodded to the judges.

It came after Ukraine sent out only two athletes, instead of the required three, in two of the three team final events.

Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev wrote on Instagram that his nation did this because one of their athletes was deemed injured and unable to compete after the cut off time for a team change. That member was presumably Semiankiv.

Switzerland, which narrowly missed out on the final, was understandably angered.

What to watch on Thursday

Australia’s clash with the United States in the men’s basketball is always a must-see event at the Olympic Games.

Can Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova lead the Boomers to a huge upset against the Dream Team? It all starts at 8am (AEST).

Earlier than that, there’s Rugby Sevens finals action, while Cameron McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers are our best chance of winning gold on day five. Both are competing in the men’s 100m freestyle at 12.03pm.

Don’t discount our team in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, either. That race takes place just before 1pm.

The pick of the bunch:

12.30am – Men’s Rugby Sevens – South Africa v Australia
5am – Men’s Rugby Sevens – Quarter-Finals + Semi-Finals
8am – Men’s Basketball – Australia v US
9.30am – Men’s Hockey – Australia v Great Britain
11.03am – Swimming – Men’s breaststroke final
11.54am – Swimming – Women’s 200m butterfly final
12.03pm – Swimming – Men’s 100m freestyle final
12.55pm – Swimming – Women’s 4x200m freestyle relay final

The Rio Report will be published each day of the 2016 Olympic Games.
