Australia has made a stunning start to its Olympics basketball campaign with the Boomers and Opals scoring wins in Rio.

Andrew Bogut, who has been under an injury cloud, led the Boomers to an 87-66 upset win over France and Liz Cambage was instrumental in the Opals’ 84-66 victory over Brazil.

It was the Boomers’ first winning start to an Olympic campaign in 20 years, with Bogut, 32, contributing 18 points — at 90 per cent shooting — five assists and four rebounds.

It was a huge effort from Bogut, who has barely played since injuring a knee in the NBA finals in June.

Fellow NBA Championship winners Patty Mills — top scorer with 21 points — and Matthew Dellavedova (10 assists) were also strong contributors.

France is ranked six places higher than Australia at No. 5.

Opals shine in second half

Australia started slowly against Brazil, but finished strongly to score a 84-66 win in its first game of the group stage.

The Opals trailed by 10 points at quarter-time, but rallied for a 49-27 second half.

Liz Cambage was brilliant, collecting 20 points and 14 rebounds.

In a highly physical battle, she scored eight of Australia’s first 10 points.

Rachel Jarry (six points) was also crucial to the team’s success, knocking down a three-pointer in the third term after coming back from what looked like an injury in the second quarter.

A 22-14 third term gave the Aussies their first lead of the game as well as all the momentum heading into the final break.

The Opals ended up with a bronze medal four years ago in London.

This time they will be aiming to go better, and the final is well within their reach.
