Golfer Shawn Stefani works on his short game during PGA tournament

American golfer Shawn Stefani was on the verge of making the cut at the Honda Classic in Florida when his tee shot at the par-4 sixth hole (his 15th of the day) found a water hazard.

What to do? Take a drop and almost certainly face a weekend off, or play the ball where it lay in the muddy edge?

The Texan decided to take his chances and take off his shoes and socks.

But he didn’t stop there. Off came his pants, and for good measure his shirt.

Commentator David Feherty could see the lighter side, chuckling: ‘”That’s what I would do if i had that body.”

Stefani managed to get his second shot 44 yards back to the fairway, and lobbed his third shot to within a few metres of the pin.

Unfortunately he missed the par putt and went on to miss the cut at two over.

The incident immediately had golf experts recalling a similar shot by Henrik Stenson at Doral in 2009 (watch the video below).

“I’ll probably take that to the grave with me,” Stenson said afterwards.

Given that people are still talking about Stenson’s moment eight years later – and not the fact that he is the first Scandinavian male to win a major after winning the 2016 British Open – Stefani can expect his strip shot to stay with him for the rest off his career.
