Socceroos star Aaron Mooy has scored his maiden English Premier League goal to give Huddersfield Town a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Mooy’s stunning strike came in the 50th minute when he played a neat one-two at the top of the box with striker Elias Kachunga, before the Australian curled his effort past Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot into the top right corner.

The lead up to the goal featured 26 straight passes from Huddersfield, the most from any EPL team in a goalscoring sequence this season.

The goal also earned Mooy a slice of history as it is the first Premier League goal to be scored by the Terriers at The John Smith’s Stadium.

Mooy was typically calm post-match as fans chanted “we are Premier League.”

“The boss has a saying to have no limits and we all stand behind that,” Mooy told Sky Sports.

“It has been a great start so far, but we can’t get carried away, it’s early in the season. We just have to keep working hard and keep trying to improve.”

It was a complete performance from Huddersfield and Mooy, who was easily the most influential player on the pitch and was lauded by manager David Wagner.

“He doesn’t really say much, doesn’t smile a lot, he’s very calm but he is for sure very happy and very proud as well, and I think he deserves all the credit for his goal,” Wagner said of Mooy.

“He’s a great technical footballer with such unbelievable working attitude. This is why I love this player.”

While Huddersfield continued to look at ease in the top flight fellow promoted side Newcastle appeared to be anything but.

They seemed bereft of ideas in attack and only had a few chances.

Matt Ritchie was thwarted early in the first half by a fine save from Terriers keeper Jonas Lossl and Ayoze Perez blew a chance to equalise in the 68th minute

The win lifts Huddersfield to second on the ladder behind Manchester United and left Wagner pleasantly surprised.

“I don’t have to pinch myself but I didn’t expect it,” he said.

While Huddersfield moved to second, champions Chelsea got the first win of their title defence against Tottenham at Wembley.

Marcos Alonso scored both the goals in the 2-1 victory, opening with a brilliant free-kick in the first half and, after a Michy Batshuayi own goal levelled the game, Alonso fired in the winner with two minutes to go.

Dele Alli fouled David Luiz on the edge of the area on 22 minutes and Alonso got the ball up and over the wall and past Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal.

Willian almost made it 2-0 for Chelsea when his shot hit the woodwork but Tottenham equalised with eight minutes to go when Batshuayi could only turn Christian Eriksen’s free-kick into his own net.

Tottenham thought they had done enough for a point but Chelsea won it six minutes later when Alonso’s shot slipped through the hands of Lloris.

The result pleased manager Antonio Conte, especially as Chelsea were missing Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill through suspension and Eden Hazard through injury.

“To play against Tottenham, away, and to win is a fantastic result. It’s not easy,” Conte said.

“I saw a lot of positive things in a moment that’s not easy for us with the suspensions and the injuries.

“I’m very happy when I see this type of game. I’m not speaking about football, but this spirit, this heart, this desire.”
