What is next for a sports star who – in addition to earning a ridiculous salary – already has a line of official shirts, underwear, fragrances and footwear?
The untapped blanket market, of course.
Three-time Footballer of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, widely regarded as the finest player of his generation alongside Lionel Messi, has expanded his flourishing business empire again.
The 31-year-old from Portugal has put his name and face to a range of blankets produced by American company Elite Team.
Sure, it’s a bit of an odd move, but it was more the uncomfortable 17-second video that accompanied Ronaldo’s announcement that got people talking.
As seen below, a topless Ronaldo lies under one of his blankets in bed and says: “Hi guys. I hope that you like my blanket like I do. Very comfortable.”
Watch the video:
The blankets aren’t cheap, with the top-of-the-range 152cm x 183cm option coming in at $A173 – and that’s before you even think about shipping.
Those blankets, which are “44 per cent larger than a regular blanket”, either come emblazoned with ‘CR7 Cristiano Ronaldo’, or a silhouette of the man himself.
Keeping with the theme, Elite Team said the blankets are “made with 100 per cent acrylic fiber directly from Portugal”.
If spending close to $A200 on a blanket is too much, you might be interested in another of the double-sided blankets.
Sized at 127cm x 152cm, they come with an artist’s impression of Ronaldo’s face on it for $A131.
Single-sided blankets – at the same size – are also available for $A80 but these only feature the ‘CR7’ logo.
Ronaldo, who recently won UEFA Euro 2016 with his Portugal side, is currently preparing for another season with Spanish giants Real Madrid.
