Sydney FC top-scorer Corey Gameiro is out for the remainder of the A-League season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Gameiro suffered the injury while playing for the Olyroos in their 1-0 win over South Korea in Wuhan, China, on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old will undergo surgery on his return to Australia.

It’s another major setback for Gameiro who missed a large chunk of last season after dislocating his kneecap when he slipped on a marble floor during the filming of TV advert for the A-League.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold said the latest news was shattering for his young striker who underwent scans to determine to full extent of the injury on Thursday morning.

“The medical staff from the FFA rang me after the game and they are 80 per cent certain,” Arnold said.

“He’s getting scans … it’s season-ending. The kid is absolutely devastated as you would imagine.

“It’s great when they go away and play with the national team but this club seems to be unlucky when it comes to injuries.

“We’ve got the depth and we’ve got the cover, but it is sad for the kid.

“It’s a big loss, the kid was doing so well. He was scoring goals, working hard and coming back after a bad season last year.”

Gameiro has scored two goals this season for the Sky Blues and was a star performer during the club’s pre-season campaign.
