Tim Cahill wonder strike up for goal of the year

Tim Cahill’s wondergoal at the 2014 World Cup is in line for FIFA’s Puskas Award after being nominated as one of the best 10 goals of the year.

The Socceroos star volleyed home a cross from Ryan McGowan to draw Australia level at 1-1 in their Group B clash with the Netherlands in Porto Alegre. The Netherlands won the match 3-2.

Despite the goal being overlooked for the top five goals of the tournament in Brazil, Cahill has now been recognised by world football’s governing body.

Others in line for the award include superstars Robin van Persie, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and James Rodriguez, and Irish women’s international Stephanie Roche for her strike for Peamount United against Wexford Youths in the Irish women’s league in October 2013.

Fans are able to vote online to determine the winner, with the top three goals decided by December 1 and the winner announced on January 12, 2015 on the day of the FIFA Ballon d’Or in Zurich.

Voting will close during the show.

The FIFA Puskás Award was created in honour of Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s.
