Colombia courageous, but it’s Brazil who stays alive

Brazil has overcome a gallant Colombia to advance to the semi-finals of its home World Cup, winning 2-1 in an action-packed match on Saturday morning.

The raucous Fortaleza crowd did not have to wait long for a Brazil goal, as captain Thiago Silva swooped in at the back post to prod home in the seventh minute.

A physical and feisty affair looked to have been levelled by Mario Yepes in the 66th minute, but a delayed offside flag from the linesman saw it ruled out.

Only five minutes later the tie appeared to be settled when David Luiz belted an unstoppably swerving free-kick into the Colombian top corner to double the advantage.

But Colombia received a late lifeline when Carlos Bacca was fouled by Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar in the box, allowing James Rodriguez to slot home the penalty.

Fifteen minutes of frantic football followed, but Colombia could not quite find the all-important equaliser, allowing the host nation a sigh of relief.

Brazil will now face Germany in the semi-final.

More to follow.
