Big guns into quarter-finals

Extra-time goals by Andre Schuerrle and Mesut Oezil saw Germany claim a hard-fought 2-1 win over Algeria in their World Cup round-of-16 clash in Porto Alegre on Tuesday morning.

The 90 minutes of regular time saw end-to-end action, as Germany’s precise and incisive passing was matched by Algeria’s blistering counter attacks.

While Germany had the better of the latter stages of regular time, Algerian goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi made a series of excellent saves to send the match to extra-time.

It did not stay goalless for long though, as only two minutes into extra-time Schuerrle got on the end of a cross to cleverly clip home what turned out to be the winning goal.

Oezil then made it 2-0 in the second half of extra time, slotting past the keeper on the second attempt.

Algeria made it interesting with barely a minute remaining as Islam Slimani swept home a volley to get a goal back, but it ultimately came too late for the plucky north Africans.

Germany will now face France in the quarter-finals, after they ended Nigeria’s hopes of a first appearance in the last eight when by scoring two late goals to beat the Super Eagles 2-0 in a rough match.

Paul Pogba put France ahead in the 79th minute, heading in at the far post after Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama flapped at Mathieu Valbuena’s corner following a sustained spell of French pressure.

The win was sealed when Joseph Yobo turned a low cross into his own goal in stoppage time, meaning France will play Germany or Algeria in the last eight.

It was a controversial victory, however, as the game had swung France’s way after Nigeria’s influential midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was injured by a late tackle from Blaise Matuidi, who was lucky to escape with only a yellow card.
