Good luck boys! Socceroos bound for Brazil

The Socceroos are on their way to Brazil, where they will compete in the World Cup finals for the fourth time in Australia’s football history.

Fans and media packed into Sydney International Airport to see the squad off, and the accompanying sea of green and gold decorations will surely make the impending 17-hour flight to Rio a little easier.

Socceroos vice-captain Mark Bresciano says with some of the more experienced heads playing possibly their last ever World Cup, they are even more determined to shine in Brazil.

“If we think it’s going to be our last World Cup, we’re going to try and finish it the best way we can,” he told a media conference.

“It’s in the back of our minds that it could be our last. We’re all going to try and make it our best.”

Young midfielder Ben Halloran has lauded the senior players’ influence in the squad, saying the likes of Bresciano and Tim Cahill have made the younger players feel welcome.

“They’ve all been very welcoming since the young boys arrived,” he said.

“It’s always good to talk to them for advice. Their advice is pretty simple, just work hard and the results will come.”

The squad will make the city of Vitoria its home for the duration of its involvement in the tournament, lodging in a luxury hotel overlooking the beach.

More importantly, the local training facilities have undergone significant reconstruction to allow the Socceroos the best possible preparation for their World Cup campaign.

Coach Ange Postecoglou on Tuesday trimmed his squad to 27 players, before making a final call on his 23-man squad on June 2.

Australia will face Croatia in Salvador on June 8 in its final pre-World Cup friendly, before kicking off the tournament proper against Chile on June 14 (AEDT).

The fixture list does not get any easier, with matches against the Netherlands on June 19 (AEDT) and Spain on June 24 (AEDT).

Australia’s farewell match against South Africa failed to inspire too much confidence on Monday night, as the match fizzled out into a 1-1 draw.
