Sydney FC sign Serbian striker
Sydney FC have beefed up their attacking options by signing former Serbian international striker Ranko Despotovic until the end of the A-League season.
Despotovic played for Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds last year, having previously spent time with a number of clubs in Romania followed by a three-year spell with Spanish second division sides Murcia, Salamanca and Girona.
The 30-year-old has also been capped four times by Serbia and played against the Socceroos in a 0-0 draw at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium in June 2011.
He will link up with his new team mates next week and could make his debut against the Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, November 23.
“I’m very excited at the prospect of joining Sydney FC,” Despotovic said.
“I’ve been training regularly in Serbia and I’m looking forward to getting started.
“I’ve played against the Socceroos and heard a lot about the A-League and what a good competition it is.”
His arrival is a much-needed boost to Sydney FC’s attack, with Frank Farina’s side failing to find the net in almost 299 minutes of football.
Joel Chianese’s 59th minute strike in the 2-0 win over Newcastle in the opening round of the season was the last time Sydney troubled the scorers as they slipped to three straight losses.
Farina said he was delighted with the signing and said Despotovic had a proven track record in front of goal.
“We are very happy to be able to add another quality striker to our squad,” Farina said.
“Ranko has a good pedigree, he can score goals and his height will give us a different attacking option.
“He will also add some extra experience to our front line.”
Sydney face Melbourne Victory on Saturday as they look to climb the table and avoid a fourth straight loss.
