Cricket captain Steve Smith’s romantic proposal

Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has announced his engagement to his partner of five years in a romantic proposal, atop the Rockefeller Center in New York.

He and law student fiancée Dani Willis were sightseeing in New York on Wednesday when the cricket star knelt on one knee and popped the question, as they enjoyed a stunning panorama of the city and and a view of iconic Empire State Building in the distance.

The 28-year-old shared a selfie on his Instagram taken shortly after the proposal of the newly engaged couple standing on New York’s Top of the Rock observation deck.

The happy snap shows his now fiancée, 26-year-old Willis, resting her hand on her husband-to-be’s chest, showing off her dazzling diamond ring.

“Today I got down on one knee and [Willis] said ‘yes’,” he wrote.

Whether or not Smith chose the Rockefeller Center for its starring role in celebrated rom-com, Sleepless in Seattle, isn’t evident.

Smith met Willis, 26, at a bar during the first season of the Big Bash League, in the summer of 2011-12.

He told Fairfax Media Willis was an “amazing” support.

“She’s always there for me when I’m around. She always gives me good advice, and tells me the truth,” Smith said.

“It’s nice that you have some honest feedback to come home to all the time. She’s been terrific for me over the last few years.”

The couple have enjoyed an overseas holiday over the past fortnight, travelling to the London and Monte Carlo, and flew to the US last week.
