Sri Lanka has beaten Bangladesh by a convincing 92 runs at the MCG thanks largely to a sensational display of batting from Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara.

Veteran batsmen Tillakaratne Dilshan (161 not out) and Kumar Sangakkara (105 not out) smashed imperious centuries to punish a wasteful Bangladesh, combining for an unbeaten 210-run stand to fire Sri Lanka to an imposing 1-332 in front of a crowd of 30,000.

Appalling in the field, Bangladesh’s middle and lower order grafted hard but were set a mission impossible after a top order collapse that saw it slump to 5-100 after 20 overs.

Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga captured the final two wickets in consecutive balls as Bangladesh was dismissed for 240 with three overs to spare.

Though master batsman Sangakkara was dropped twice in his aggressive 76-ball knock, 38-year-old Dilshan was virtually flawless as he enjoyed a welcome return to form after scoring 24 and a duck in the team’s opening matches against New Zealand and Afghanistan respectively.

He belted 22 fours to all corners of the ground to notch his highest score in ODIs and muttered thanks to the heavens after completing his 21st ton in the format off a streaky inside edge.

He later returned to take 2-35 with his part-time offspin, dismissing all-rounder Shakib al Hasan for 46 and having Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza stumped by wicketkeeper Sangakkara for seven to walk away with the man-of-the-match award.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan picked up its first World Cup victory, beating Scotland by one wicket in their Pool A clash in Dunedin.

The Afghans looked on track to cruise to the winning total of 211 on Thursday when they were 2-85 in the 19th over, but the wicket of Javed Ahmadi (51) sparked a rapid collapse.

Scotland took five wickets in 5.3 overs to reduce Afghanistan to 7-97 in the 24th over.

Samiullah Shenwari (96) and Dawlat Zadran (9) batted safely but only put on 35 runs before Zadran attempted an ill-advised lofted drive, only to hole out to Preston Mommsen off the bowling of Richie Berrington (4-40) in the 35th over.

Shenwari then went about batting Afghanistan to the unlikeliest of victories, pulling out some big hitting as he put on 60 runs with Hamid Hassan, before he picked out Josh Davey on the rope as he looked for his fourth six off Majid Haq’s (1-45) last over.

That left tail-enders Hamid Hassan and Shapoor Zadran 19 balls to get 19 runs for victory, and Shapoor whipped a four off the third ball of the final over to hand Afghanistan a historic win.
