Collingwood’s Dane Swan, who suffered a serious foot injury in Round 1, is almost certain to announce his retirement from the AFL.
While the 32-year-old has been contemplating a comeback, News Corp reports that he will retire because playing on would risk his long-term health.
The 2011 Brownlow medallist and three-time Copeland Trophy winner broke three bones in his foot, including a Lisfranc fracture.
The damage he sustained was likened to a serious car crash injury.
Coach Nathan Buckley gave little away when asked about Swan’s intentions following the Magpies’ 71-point win over Gold Coast.
But Buckley confirmed Swan had made a decision regarding his future.
“I’m aware of what Swanny is going to do and we’ll be able to let you know about what that looks like during the week,” Buckley said.
“50-50 I would have thought. It’s either that (Swan is retiring), or he’s not.”

“If I think I (can) go round and not be in pain with my foot and not ache, I’ll play on,” Swan told radio station Triple M earlier this month.
“But if there’s any little doubt there that I don’t think I can get through a year without pain and sort of starting to resent footy, waking up aching and walking with a bit of a loser’s limp all day and doing more damage to my foot for the rest of my life, well, I won’t go on.”
