Hawthorn, Port and Bulldogs bounce back

Playing his 100th game for Hawthorn, forward Luke Breust has bagged three goals to help his side post a 53-point win over the Gold Coast Suns.

Together with the return from suspension of captain Luke Hodge, who kicked two goals, it was a comfortable 14.9 (93) to 6.4 (40) victory for the Hawks at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium on Saturday.

The skipper finished with 30 disposals and six clearances, making a determined return for the brown and gold.

Forward David Hale was a standout for the reigning AFL premiers, featuring in the free-flowing play and finding the middle sticks three times.

The result takes the Hawks to five wins and four losses for the season while the lowly placed Suns have just one victory so far for 2015.

The Hawks went to the main break with a 14-point margin, but hadn’t truly shaken the Suns, who, despite their injury depleted lineup stuck with them through the first half.

Suns forward Tom Lynch produced two second-term goals and was the side’s top goal-scorer.

Former Hawk Mitch Hallahan notched up 30 disposals against his old club and Michael Rischitelli finished with 23.

Jack Martin’s return from a two-round absence due to an ankle injury was short-lived as the half-forward was subbed off within the opening three minutes of play suffering a suspected hamstring complaint.

It’s more bad news for the Suns who on Saturday were already without key players including Gary Ablett (shoulder), David Swallow (knee) and Dion Prestia (knee).

Elsewhere, Port Adelaide overcame a 24-point deficit to thrash Melbourne by 61 points in their clash in Alice Springs.

The Power were in danger of slumping to their fourth straight loss when they trailed 38-14 midway through the second quarter of Saturday’s match.

But an inspired six-goal burst before half-time swung things Port’s way, with the Power rediscovering their run-and-stun game style in the 18.7 (115) to 8.6 (54) triumph at Traeger Park.

Jay Schulz finished with four goals, while Robbie Gray (26 disposals, one goal) provided the class across half-forward with numerous goal assists.

Midfielders Brad Ebert and Travis Boak tallied 31 possessions each in the win, with the result improving Port’s record to 4-5 ahead of next week’s clash with the Bulldogs.

Melbourne kicked just two goals in the second half, with the young side tiring in the warm conditions.

The Western Bulldogs have rediscovered their snarl at the expense of Greater Western Sydney, upsetting the Giants by 45 points at Etihad Stadium.

Onballer Mitch Wallis was best on field with 36 possessions and the Bulldogs defenders were outstanding as they beat the in-form Giants 16.17 (113) to 11.2 (68).

The Bulldogs broke a three-game losing streak that had taken the shine off their exciting start to the season.

The glaring difference in scoring shots – 33 to 13 – was a better reflection of the game than the margin.

It was a disappointing performance from the Giants and too many of their stars were found wanting under the Bulldogs’ fierce pressure.

Bulldogs ruckman Will Minson was also prominent after his big week.

Minson returned to the senior team for the first time since round three but first had a dramatic couple of nights at the VFL tribunal.

After being suspended for umpire contact, his four-game ban was reduced to a fine and reprimand on appeal.

Minson celebrated his change of fortune with a strong game that featured 17 hitouts and two goals.
