Bombers gallant, but run out of legs against Swans

Essendon’s heavily disrupted preseason cost it dearly as the Sydney Swans ran over the top of the combative Bombers for a 12-point win.

Dees break through for some round-one glory

On a wet afternoon at Sydney’s Olympic stadium the Bombers were the better team for the first three quarters before running out of legs as the Swans hit back hard to secure the 10.12 (72) to 9.6 (60) result.

None of the Essendon players involved in the ASADA scandal played a preseason match, and after David Myers was substituted early with a dislocated shoulder the lack of run was telling in the end.

Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett, who finished with three and two goals respectively, were influential in the final term turnaround, while Adam Cooney marked his Bombers debut with three goals.

More to come.
