Shaw to miss three more weeks with brain bleed

Greater Western Sydney defender Heath Shaw will miss another three weeks of football after it emerged he had suffered bleeding on the brain in his sickening collision with Kurt Tippett.

Shaw was knocked out cold on June 28 when he received an accidental knee from Tippett in the face.

Scans at the time revealed a small bleed on the brain, and on Thursday Giants coach Leon Cameron said he would not be considered for selection until the bleed subsides.

“Initially when he got the knock in the Sydney game there was a very minor bleed to the brain,” Cameron said.

“Heath’s welfare comes first and we have to be really, really careful with how he’s progressing.

“He’s not going to play until after the bye.

“One thing I will say is he’s starting to progress really well now.

“He ran today for the first time, he’s upbeat, he’s confident he’ll get back and play some good footy after the bye.”

Shaw, 28, joined GWS at the end of last season after 173 games for Collingwood, including the 2010 premiership.
