Georgia Godwin has become the country’s most decorated women’s gymnast at the Commonwealth Games after Australia’s swimmers banked five more gold medals.

Godwin burst into tears as she guided the nation to a team gold medal in the women’s team competition in Glasgow.

Godwin won her ninth Games medal to surpass Allana Slater in the record books, with Australia leading from the outset en route to a final score of 158.400 points at Glasgow International Arena on Sunday morning AEST.

Australia’s five-woman squad was unrelenting across the four apparatuses – vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor – to win the nation’s first team gold medal since the 2010 Delhi Games.

The breakout star of the 2022 Games, Godwin hit the ground running in her emotional comeback from a traumatic Achilles injury she suffered just three months before the 2024 Olympics.

She had ruptured the tendon in her left foot doing a round-off flick double pike while training a floor routine.

Nailing her floor exercise in Glasgow, the 28-year-old was in tears and scored 12.850 points.

Godwin will look to cement her legacy at the Games when she aims to defend her individual all-around and vault titles.

Earlier, Australia’s swimmers turned the Tollcross pool into their own Commonwealth Games pleasure dome as they scored five more gold medals.

Sam Short led home a dominant Australian medal clean sweep in the 400m freestyle final to launch the second night of the Glasgow swimming program in dazzling style ahead of poorly teammate Elijah Winnington and Ben Goedemans.

Olympic great Mollie O’Callaghan powered to 200m free victory ahead of teammate, 400m winner Lani Pallister, while Alex Perkins annexed a long-awaited gold in the 50m butterfly.

Sam Williamson added a fourth gold medal for Australia, upstaging two-time Olympic champion Adam Ramsay-Peaty in the 100m breaststroke.

Flynn Southam, Kyle Chalmers, Shayna Jack and Meg Harris then cemented the Dolphins’ spectacular start, winning the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay as Australia backed up their six golds on the opening night.

Short, who’s shooting for an ambitious five gold medals in Glasgow, put on a mighty demonstration to destroy the field by more than four seconds in 3 minutes 41.25 seconds on Sunday morning (AEST) before offering a muscle man celebration.

“It doesn’t come around too often and you’ve got to make the most of it,” said the Queenslander of his extravagant flex.

“I saw my idols do that on the lane ropes so I was like, you know, why not?!”
